How to Troubleshoot a Disabled or Restricted Instagram Account
A disabled or restricted Instagram account usually traces back to a policy violation, suspicious activity, or unfinished verification. Because Instagram runs on Meta's systems, recovery splits into two paths: an in-app appeal for the account itself, and Meta Business Support for professional and ad accounts. Here's how to work both — and what to do when they stall.

Why your Instagram account was restricted
Instagram accounts and the ad accounts behind them get restricted for familiar reasons:
- Policy violations — content or activity that appears to break Instagram's Community Guidelines or Meta's Advertising Standards.
- Suspicious or unusual activity — logins, automation, or rapid changes that look like they might not be you.
- Incomplete verification — identity or security checks that were never completed.
Path 1: Appeal the account inside the Instagram app
If your personal or creator account is disabled or action-blocked, start in the app:
- Open Instagram. If you see a notice that your account is disabled or restricted, follow the on-screen prompt to appeal or request a review.
- If there's no prompt, go to Settings → Help → Report a Problem, or check Account Status under Settings to see what triggered the restriction and what you can do.
- You may be asked to confirm your identity with a code sent to your email or phone, and in some cases a photo or video selfie.
Path 2: Professional & ad accounts in Meta Business Support
If your Instagram is a professional account connected to a business portfolio, or the restriction is on the ad account, the controls live in Meta's business tools. On a computer:
- Go to Meta Business Support Home.
- Open Account status overview and click the restricted account.
- Follow the What you can do section. The most common steps are below.
Confirm your identity
You'll typically confirm your identity before the account is reinstated. Complete the on-screen steps, which may require:
- The email address on your account
- Your mobile phone for an SMS code
- A photo of your ID, such as a passport or driver's license
- The payment method linked to the account
If nothing else is needed, the account is reinstated once your identity is confirmed. Some checks are time-limited, so finish promptly.
Complete verification
If Meta detects unusual behavior, you'll see Start verification or Request review. Verification may ask for your account email, a photo ID, and your payment method. A review flow usually involves securing your account with two-factor authentication, verifying your email via a unique link, and getting approval from someone with full control of the Business Account.
Enable two-factor authentication
For business portfolios more than 90 days old, Meta may require two-factor authentication. Without it, access to Meta Business Suite tools can be restricted. Choose Secure your account under What you can do and complete the steps; the account is reinstated once 2FA is on.
Request a review
For a policy-violation restriction you believe is wrong, request a review — you must be an admin on the account. Meta re-examines it and decides whether the restriction stays.
Important things to know
- Only an admin can request a review of an ad account.
- If a disabled ad account stays ineligible for 6 months, unused prepaid balance may be forfeited where the law allows, and the account can no longer be reinstated. Meta may also act permanently before then in some cases.
- Both in-app appeals and ad-account reviews are limited — don't burn your attempts on a rushed submission.
When the self-service steps don't work
The in-app appeal and Meta Business Support cover the textbook cases. But Instagram recoveries often stall — the appeal is denied, the account bounces between "review" states, or no path actually resolves the block. Firing off more appeals can make things worse.
You don't have to keep guessing.
